Description

Woollen mill, probably of pre-1770 foundation: in 1789 there were Old and New Mills on the site. Occupied by Ramsden family and later by Ramsden Mill Company. The Ramsden family were variously fulling millers, scribbling and fulling millers and woollen manufacturers, and it is likely that from late 18th century Ramsden Mill provided both public scribbling and fulling services and private services for the family businesses. Early buildings included two water-powered mills; one, of three storeys and attic and five bays, dates probably from the early 19th century. Later development involved the addition of a five-storeyed fifteen-bay steam-powered mill of c1860. Associated buildings: Bankfield, manufacturer's mansion, of c184 0, with adjacent loomshop. Partially demolished.
