Yorkshire > West Yorkshire > Ossett > Spedding Oddy's rag warehouse
Built in 1864-5 as combined dwelling and warehouse, the latter for rag storage and grading. One of a number of such rag warehouses in Ossett serving local recovered wool, and especially mungo, manufacturers. The work of a rag merchant involved sorting, seaming, ripping, cutting and packing of rags, and these processes were usually arranged within the warehouse in a sequence starting on the top floor and working down. Firm of Spedding Oddy had occupied this warehouse since the 1930s and continued in business until recent years.
