Description

Main mill of J, T and J Taylor, the largest woollen manufacturers in Batley (See also Cheapside Mills, Batley). In 1820 site comprised only a house and workshops, but loomshops and press shop soon added, with spinning and fulling undertaken at nearby company mill. After 1845 production concentrated at Blakeridge with enlargement of existing buildings and construction of new steam-powered mills in 1863 (four storeys, fifteen bays), 1870 (four storeys, eight bays), and 1904 (four storeys, four bays). Powerloom weaving located partly in multi-storeyed building and probably partly in sheds. Early 20th-century prosperity evident in construction of very large mill (five storeys, twenty-five bays) in 1912-13, probably electrically powered, of large wool warehouse in 1914, and offices in 1923.
