Description

Fielden Brothers, the largest firm in the Yorkshire cotton industry, developed from a domestic cotton-spinning and weaving business established in 1782 by Joshua Fielden. Steam-powered five-storeyed mill soon built and later enlarged; shed (Old Shed) for 800 powerlooms opened in 1829 and another, the New Shed, built for 1,000 powerlooms c1840. Extensive warehouses, mechanics' and joiners' shops, and gasworks also constructed. Fielden Brothers ran up to thirteen other mills in Todmorden area in 19th century but from 1890 concentrated on Waterside Mill, Robinwood Mill, Todmorden and Walsden, and Lumbutts Mill, Langfield (62207). Associated buildings, mainly designed by John Gibson, include the mansions of Stansfield Hall, Dobroyd Castle and Centre Vale which were respectively extended, built and rebuilt by members of the Fielden family, and various public buildings in Todmorden, including the Unitarian Church, Town Hall and Centre Vale School. Part demolished.
