Description

Large steam-powered worsted mill, begun in 1866 to designs by William Sugden of Leek, Staffordshire, and expanding rapidly over rest of decade. Original scheme comprised three ornate mills -Tower Mill begun 1866 (four storeys and attic, nine bays), Genappe Mill, begun 1868 (three storeys, thirty-eight bays), and New Mill, begun 1869 (three storeys, thirty-three bays) -a long shed (begun 1866), engine houses, one for Tower Mill and Shed, the other for the two main mills, boiler houses, a chimney and offices. The buildings are grouped around a narrow yard. The millowners, I and I Craven, were worsted spinners and manufacturers, but it appears that Dalton Mills was used mainly for spinning. Later alterations included the addition in 1904 of two horizontal engine houses to designs by John Haggas and Sons, Keighley, necessitated by the accidental wrecking of the original pair of beam engines.
