Description

Water-powered fulling mill, established before the mid 18th century. Site used at different times as corn mill and worsted mill, but principal use was in woollen branch. Development from early small mill was slow: steam-powered timber-floored spinning mill of five storeys and eleven bays built c1864 and weaving shed c1882, a surprisingly late date for the achievement of integrated working. Offices, warehouses, finishing buildings and modern manufacturing buildings complete the complex. No substantial remains of the early mill survive. Associated buildings: workers' cottages.

Additional information

Bower's Mill was built in the 18th century as a water-powered fulling mill. It has also been used as a corn mill, a worsted mill and a woolen mill. Textiles manufacturer J. & S. Taylor Ltd occupied the mill from 1882 to 1991 before moving production to Sowerby Bridge. The mill has now been converted for smaller businesses.
