Description

Established by William Brook as woollen mill in late 18th century, converted to cotton spinning by 1805, and developed by Brooks into one of largest cotton mills in Yorkshire, from mid 19th century concentrating on thread manufacture. Site both water and steam powered, with six multi-storeyed mills, up to six storeys high and thirteen bays long, built before 1850. Single-storeyed sheds built after 1850, and five-storeyed mill in 1927-8. Other buildings included gasworks, bleachworks, dyehouse and saw mill. Associated buildings: manufacturers' mansions, including Meltham Hall; extensive workers' housing on mill site and elsewhere; public buildings including churches, schools, Convalescent Home, and Carlile Institute and Town Hall in Meltham. Largely demolished.
