Slaithwaite is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it lies in the Colne Valley, lying across the River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of Huddersfield.

In the 1848 edition of 'A Topographical Dictionary of England', Samuel Lewis (the editor) wrote:- "the lands are in meadow and pasture, with a small portion of arable; the scenery is bold and romantic. In the quarries of the district are found vegetable fossils, especially firs and other mountain trees. The village is beautifully seated in the valley of the river Colne; the inhabitants are chiefly employed in the woollen manufacture, in the spinning of cotton and silk, and in silk-weaving".

Hello , I am trying to trace my Shaw family that resided in the Slaithwaite area ,most of them worked in the mill industries.

The furthest I can go back is John Shaw born 1821 who was a cart and horse driver.

I was wondering if there are mill lists of workers of who worked where.

Unfortunately I will in the US so I am relying on internet data.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Graeme Shaw

My grandmother used to live at wharf Cottage in Slaithwaite just opposite the Globe Mill on the other bank of the canal. Does the place still exist or has it been demolished? Is it possible to see it on any photos?

I lived there for a short while as a baby in 1944 having been born in Marsden.
