Description

Steam-powered woollen mill, 1860s and later. Early history uncertain, but by 1900 site was a fully integrated mill with production divided between a mill of four and a half storeys (for scribbling and spinning) and sheds (for weaving, finishing and dyeing). Local concentration on use of recovered wool reflected in construction by 1915 of large rag warehouse and of rag-grinding sheds.

My father (George Whitehead from about 1948-1953) was managing director of Gray Carpets which had the following mills in the area: John Fenton & David Bradley Mills Ltd in Batley, Dewsbury and Morley. Thomas Dyson & Sons in Huddersfield. Edwin Walker & Co. Ltd also in Huddersfield. Grays (Dewsbury) Ltd in Batley.

You can find information about us at Maggie Land Blanck History of Batley on Google.

You can read a little about me on that site.

If you have any more information on the items about I would appreciate it. Thank you. I left Batleey in 1954 and live in USA.
