Description

Complex of steam-powered mills developed from the mid 1860s as a speculation by Sir Henry Ripley, owner of Bowling Dyeworks. Mills let on a room and power basis, and tenants at different tunes included worsted spinners and manufacturers, woolcombers and mohair spinners. Ripley's speculation involved the intense development of a block of land, almost entirely built up with mills, warehouses, sheds and ancillary buildings. The Ripleyville estate was developed as workers' housing by the Ripley family: over 200 houses were built, as well as almshouses of 1857 rebuilt in 1871.
