Description

Woollen mill, obscure origins but certainly in existence by 1848 as a spinning mill, apparently using water power. Buildings, almost entirely of post-1850 date, are two mills, engine and boiler houses and modern sheds (1950). After 1857 mill was occupied by woollen manufacturers and may have been used for both spinning and weaving, despite absence of early weaving sheds. In 1919-20 new owners remodelled power system, building new engine house for a horizontal engine and a rope race. Mill forms part of a closely built up area which includes a number of early 19th-century cottages with loomshops.
