Established as a steam-powered woollen mill c1830-40. Mill of four storeys and attic, eleven bays, timber floored. Owners, John Firth and Sons, built extremely large new fireproof mill (six storeys, twenty-seven bays) in 1861 as room and power mill; in 1872, the mill had nine tenants. After c1880 mill used mainly for cotton spinning, probably producing warps for the local mixed-fibre manufacture.
