Yorkshire > West Yorkshire > Manningham > Whetley Mills
Steam-powered worsted-spinning mill, built in 1863 to designs by Milnes and France of Bradford. Large warehouse, combing shed, engine house, spinning mill, yarn and waste warehouses, offices and foreman's house were grouped around a small yard which contained boiler house and chimney. Main mill (five storeys, basement and attic, nineteen bays) of fireproof construction. A single engine house provided power to shed and mill: in the latter, drive transmitted by upright shaft in projecting shaft tower. Later additions to combing sheds (1871, 1883, 1912), new power system and additions to warehouses. An important and architecturally impressive example of a large-scale worsted-spinning mill with its own combing capacity.
